Master’s in Italy-Common questions answered (updated 2025)

How to Apply?
Each university has its own unique application process. The one I’m familiar with is detailed here, so have a look at the How to Apply section. Beyond this, you probably won’t have too many more questions about the application process. However, if you still do, I’d recommend revisiting the website. After all, you’re investing time and money into your education. Make sure you read the first-hand information thoroughly before anything else. Stay updated, as some universities have recently updated their admission procedures and online portals.

How Is the Course?
This will vary depending on your course, but from my experience of studying here for almost a year, it’s quite different from the Indian education system, especially in fields like Architecture and Urban Planning. We were often taught in a more traditional, intense, and hands-on way back home. Here, it’s much more about consistent effort. Courses can be intense, with regular assignments — sometimes weekly — across all subjects, making it feel quite hectic. However, this daily effort ensures that, come exam time, you will feel well-prepared. Most courses are theoretical but engaging, and the professors are highly qualified and approachable. Additionally, diversity in the classroom means you will rarely face issues like racism, so you can focus fully on your studies.

What is the Process to Get Your Visa?
Have you received your admission letter yet? If so, check out this guide on the Visa Process. If you haven’t, give it a bit more time. The people answering your questions are doing so to help, so please make sure to go through the necessary steps before reaching out again.

What Are the Scholarships Available and How to Apply?
Scholarships vary from one university to another. For DSU in Milan, you can find detailed info on their website. Keep checking regularly, as deadlines change yearly. We, as students, often rely on the website and communication from the university to get our information. Stay proactive!

Can I Work Part-Time While Studying?
Yes, working part-time is definitely possible, but there are a few things to consider. Do you know the local language? Can you manage to balance your studies with work? If you answer yes to both, you’re in a good position. However, securing a part-time job related to your field of study may be tough. Most international students find part-time work in fields like food delivery, childcare, or tutoring. It’s important to plan ahead and manage your time well.

Job Placements After the Course?
The global job market is still recovering from the pandemic, and Italy is no different. The university organizes job fairs and other career-related events to help students connect with employers. However, don’t expect to land your dream job straight away. The degree will likely get you a better job than one you could have secured with a degree back home, but moderate your expectations to avoid disappointment.

Cost of Living in Italy?
I’m only familiar with Milan, which is the most expensive city in Italy. The cost of living depends on your lifestyle. If you secure a DSU scholarship, your living expenses will be minimized. If not, it all comes down to your accommodation choice. In Milan, a single room can cost anywhere from 400 to 650 EUR per month, while shared rooms range from 250 to 400 EUR. If you cook your meals, your monthly grocery bill will be under 150 EUR. Transportation costs are manageable, with an annual travel card costing about 200 EUR, which covers travel within the city. A mobile phone plan will typically cost around 10-14 EUR a month. These are the basics, but other expenses will depend on your personal lifestyle.

Can You Help Me Choose My Course?
No, that’s entirely up to you! It took me a year of research to choose my course, so it’s important you put in that effort too. Take your time, research thoroughly, and don’t let someone you met online make such a significant decision for you.

If you have any other questions, feel free to leave a comment, and I’ll respond as soon as possible it’s more efficient for me to answer publicly for the benefit of everyone. 😊 Best of luck!
